Unable to access octopus variables when step fails

Hi,
When a powershell step fails with a non-zero exit code, the octopus variables we set within the script are not accessible to any of the following steps.

We would like to send information that is gathered within the powershell script via an email using an email step template. However, we set exit code to 1, non of the variables we set are accessible. Only if the powershell script exits with 0 will the variables be accessible to us. Can this be fixed? Is there a workaround?
