Labeling A Release Version Using Semantic Versioning

I would like to have the ability to label my releases using semantic versioning. That is, in addition to the major.minor.hotfix (e.g., 1.0.1), I’d like to have a “pre-release” version like 1.0.1-alpha2.

Does anyone else share this interest? If this questions has been asked/addressed, I will remove this post - I couldn’t find it during my brief search.
