Variable editor keeps reverting back to plain text type

I’m using the full page variable editor and I’m trying store a JSON object in the variable. But, every time I edit the variable, it reverts back to plain text. It would be nice to have the editor maintain that and may provide some smart formatting when it knows the type of text being put in. I’m currently using 2018.9.9.
