Same machine x-Environments

Hi,
Wondering if there is a recommended approach when using the same machine across multiple environments

e.g. a SQL Box with 2 SQL instances for use in DEV & UAT . I can probably distinguish the SQL instance (via a variable) on the same box using the Environment scope. is this the best approach?
