Is it possible to rename a role?

Hello,

We have decided that we made some poor choices for our role names that we allocate to the machines in octopus.

Is it possible to re-name them? Would this be a raven task?

Hi - no, currently the only option for this is to use the API, and that would be fairly involved (updating variable sets, processes etc.)

Doing this manually’s the quickest way right now.

Will it be enough to manually rename it in Machines and Projects docs ?
Is there something else that should be changed ?

Hi Igal,

Yes, you can change the documents - Machines and DeploymentProcess are the ones that would need to be changed (plus possibly VariableSets if you scope any variables to a specific role).

Thanks for clarifying.

Just to share the experience - In my case I preferred to minimize manual db intervention and changed manually only Machines document. Then, I aligned changed role names in the process steps by the octopus GUI, selecting the new role names from the list, which minimizes also the change for typo :slight_smile:
